Week 20: I Know What to Do But…

2/24/21

Notes by: Saadhvi Mamidi

Review from Last Week
• Our nature is what makes us!
• We are intellectually capable, but this is not always reflected in our actions.
• Our collective habits form our personality/nature.
• How do we transcend the likes and dislikes that form our habits? We engage in our responsibilities!

This Week
• Whenever our parents tell us to do something (clean the dishes, our room, etc.), we frequently respond with “I know! I know!”
o Our parents do this because we know what to do, but don’t do it

• So, why do we do things when we know they’re bad? Or why do we not do things when we know they’re good?
o We ALWAYS want the results of good action, but can’t seem to do good action

Papa: not following the rules, leaves us with a bad aftertaste, or guilt, compromising our values, agitation or distress, pollutes the mind, nurtures ignorance
Example: You’re at a party, and a group of friends peer pressure you into having a drink. Although you know that drinking goes against your values, you drink.

Punya: following the rules, makes you feel good, sacrificing for others, conducive, awesome, helps us with our long-term goals, allows us to see clearly, quietens the mind (Nature of Happiness)
Example: You’re at a party, and a group of friends peer pressure you into having a drink. You’re able to stand your ground and tell your friends that you won’t drink because you’re driving home.

If we know what to do, how do we do it?
1. Be clear about what you’re doing — is it leading you to punya or papa?
2. Revisit the feelings you get when you engage in papa and punya (engage in a cost benefit analysis)
3. Focus on what you should do
4. Reflect on your purpose

Purpose pulls performance

When we have a purpose, our personality works together for a common goal (bringing mind and intellect together)

Activity: Create a 2 minute sketch that reflects either papa or punya.

Reflection on RAW from last week
• 1/3 of your food for every meal should be raw
o When we eat clean food, our mind is cleansed, and we physically feel better (less lethargic).
o Good food keeps our mind steady, with mental dynamism, has an effect.

RAW for this week
• At the end of the day, reflect and list 2 decisions you could’ve made differently
• Delete the word “but” from your vocabulary
