Vrata — Being Determined

Notes by Aditya Mahes

What is the difference for Event and movement?

  • An event has a start and stop time.
  • A movement has a start but no finish
  • You need to have strength (Tapa) to have movement (determination), but you don’t need movement for an event (short-term) Parents and Happy Hour are a movement not an event

Story: Dhruva

Dhruva, a six year old boy is determined. He goes to the jungle to do penance; to find himself. Dhruva started his meditation, and went without food and water for six months, his mind fixed on the Lord.

1st Month: Only ate fruits every third day

2nd Month: Only ate grass every sixth day

3rd Month: Only drank water every ninth day

4th Month: Only took a breath every 12 days

5th Month: Didn’t drink, eat, or breath (He had become completely calm)

6th Month: He stood on one foot and then one toe.

He then found out how strong he was and his happiness

From the Tao of Pooh

Pooh is like a river — Windy, not straight, will go around an obstacle (His surroundings don’t affect him) He is determined to be happy

The Woo-way — You don’t waste time in your mental fights. For example, when your alarm clock rings, you can’t decide whether to snooze or to wake up (What I mean by mental fights).

  • Respect yourself
  • When you don’t understand yourself, you don’t respect yourself.
  • When you understand yourself, you tend to respect yourself.
  • Understanding yourself means, you understand your strengths and weaknesses and become a better and better person. But, this shouldn’t be influenced by others.

Practice:

Held two glasses straight and at shoulder level.

Why? Those who are determined are never tired or shaky.
