Rules are Cool!

Notes by Dhruva Shreejay

There is a movie called the Karate Kid. It is about a karate teacher named Mr. Miyagi and his student. Mr. Miyagi taught his student how to make his car look beautiful using a technique called “wax on and wax off”. He made the student do that every day until the tournament. The student was confused about how this technique helped him learn karate.

In the karate tournament, one of his strongest opponents attacked the student trained by Mr. Miyagi. The student used the wax on move to block the student’s move, and wax off to confuse the opponent. With that move, he won the karate tournament.

Message of Story

1. Following rules makes you cool. This is because when you follow rules, no one has to worry about you.

2. Following rules also makes you strong. This is because you don’t have to worry about what others do or say.

3. Following rules help you let go of being afraid and make you less scared.

Vivekji taught us a Sanskrit shloka from the Mahabharata — “Dharmo Rakshati Rakshitaha” which means that the one who follows rules is protected by the rules.

Practice

Ask your parents about all the work they do at home and how you can take one of their responsibilities from them to help them. Build an agreement with your parents.

This practice is meant to make us more responsible, learn life skills, help our parents, be cooler, stronger, less scared.

RAW (from last week)– Think about a recent gift and how you felt about it when you got it then and how you feel about it now. You feel less excited about the gift now vs. then. The gift did not change, but your mind changed. Lesson: Focus less on materials and more on your mind
