The Initiative
From July 4 (Independence Day) to August 19 (Raksha Bandhan), let us rise in our responsibilities and share our privilege through Efforts for Safety…
giving Effort
- Communicate with policy-makers regarding policies that could reduce the rate of preventable injury and death by firearms.
- Share public health strategies that have proven effective, similar to those used in the tobacco industry and motor vehicle safety.
giving Time
- Reflect on safety as a basic need that must be met before one can progress on their spiritual journey.
- Discuss the impact of public policy on our daily lives and the public health approach to creating a safer society.
giving Resources
- Our CommUnity has supported 2 organizations: Roca and Guitars Over Guns.
- Both organizations work in supporting and empowring youth to prevent gun violence.
What does safety mean to you?
GIVING EFFORT
Public health is most effective when combining science, education, policy, advocacy, and innovation. It is the science of protecting and improving the health of people and their communities. This has been done through many public initiatives such as seat belts and airbags, clean drinking water, avoiding tobacco exposure, cancer prevention, immunizations, and infection control.
Firearms have become the leading cause of injury and death in children and firearm safety and gun violence has recently been declared a public health crisis by the United States Surgeon General. Please join our CommUnity to address this critical public health initiative by following the Chinmaya Mission Pledge:
We believe that the service of our country is the service of the Lord of Lords, and devotion to the people is devotion to the supreme Self.
We know our responsibilities.
Give us the ability and courage to fulfill them.
GIVING TIME
GIVING RESOURCES
Roca’s mission is to be a relentless force in disrupting incarceration, poverty, and racism by engaging the young adults, police, and systems at the center of urban violence in relationships to address trauma, find hope, and drive change.
The Roca Impact Institute is Roca’s intensive coaching arm designed to equip institutions and individuals at the center of urban violence with tools and strategies to address trauma, reduce violence and improve outcomes for young people.
Roca’s Rewire CBT, developed in partnership with Massachusetts General Hospital, is a simple, skill-based approach to Cognitive Behavioral Theory that frontline staff can implement as a core behavior change intervention with the highest-risk young people.
Rewire CBT is a seven-skill cognitive behavioral theory (CBT) approach designed for frontline staff to help young people learn and practice the lifesaving skills they need to heal from trauma and increasingly make healthier choices.
The seven skills: Be Present; Label Your Feelings; Move It; Act on Your Values; Stick With It; Flex Your Thinking; and Solve It.
