Grand Bend Family Retreat

By Dwija Ramesh and Shefali Panicker

From Friday, March 15th to Sunday, March 17th, 2024, 30 families from various parts of North America gathered at the picturesque Oakwood Resort in Grand Bend, Ontario, Canada. Guided by Vijayji, Vivekji, and Sumanji, this annual retreat served as a haven for introspection and growth. The overarching theme of the retreat revolved around the concept of detachment—a journey into slowing down, stepping back, and seeing more!

Organized exclusively by CHYKS and CHYSKS, every detail of the retreat exuded warmth and inclusivity, catering to individuals of all ages, from toddlers to those aged 70 and beyond. Discourses by the guides were based in Chapter 2 of Bhagavad Gita, offering practical insights on understanding and fearlessly letting go of desires. Every discourse was followed by discussions and opportunities to ask guides questions. Other activities included guided meditation, yogasana, arts and crafts, soccer, beach walks, a movie and an interactive workshop about climate awareness.

Simultaneously, children under the age of 13 participated in Bala Vihar classes, where they enjoyed storytelling sessions, interactive games, and learned directly from the guides and other dedicated sevaks/sevikas. This retreat served as a vital pause for families to rejuvenate and reflect, allowing them to return home with a refreshed outlook on their responsibilities. As this enriching experience concluded, it stood as a testament to the transformative power of such gatherings facilitated by Chinmaya Mission Niagara. The next retreat held by Chinmaya Mission Niagara will be the Devi retreat, held in Chinmaya Dhara.
