Week 17: Vinayana

by Dwija Ramesh

Review:

We talked about Viveka: through the sacred level (Paramarthika satya, Pratibhasika satya, and Vyavaharikasatya) as well as the relative reality (prioritization).

Discourse:

Vinayana – Discipline

  • Vi – very well
  • Nayana – to lead/conduct
  • To conduct our senses and mind well

For the senses, this is called Indriya Nigraha – Discipline of the senses(Dama)

  • To develop this, eat something good for you every time you think about eating something unhealthy – When you express control over your tongue, it will develop subtly

For the mind, this is called Mano Nigraha – Discipline of the mind (Sama)

  • To develop this, exercise for 20 minutes per day—sticking to this will help you complain less – intellect over mind. By invoking this understanding, our thoughts will become still by not constantly seeking happiness elsewhere

When you practice these two, you will have an inner glow – you will be Dynamic.

Activity:

Find a place to sit cross-legged and sit there without moving for 10 minutes.

We enjoyed the silence. Many of us directed our mind when it started to get tempted to engage in the distractions Sumanji graciously provided us with. This exercise was to help us tune into ourselves. A restless body is indicative of a restless mind.

Reflection Adventure of the Week

Last week’s RAW was: Each morning look in the mirror for 5 minutes and think about what the purpose of that person is

If we don’t take the time to look at ourselves, we will never intentionally ask ourselves what weam here to do.

This week’s RAW is: Sleep on the floor with just a pillow, sheet and blanket

Contemplation becomes a source of joy for those who practice and help one to maintain and remain peaceful especially like travelling on a noisy bus or train. being able to converse with yourself is a wonderful experience.
