FAQ
I am new to Chinmaya Niagara. Which Course or Culture should I join?
Well, first… welcome to our community! We’re excited to have you here. On the poster at the top of this page, you’ll see that some Courses are designed for the introductory level, while some of our Cultures are open to all. If you’re unsure what would be the best fit, you should sign up for a short conversation with one of our Ambassadors for tailored recommendations!
What is the difference between a Course and Culture?
Courses are structured offerings that generally follow a specific text. While Courses are frequently interactive, the flow is usually more formal. Weekly attendance is mandatory.
Cultures, like Courses, may follow a curriculum. However, they are designed to be flexible, much like a university club. Cultures are also organized around a specific identity (e.g., college students/young professionals, parenting, etc). Most participants choose to attend weekly, although that is not necessarily required.
Where can I find Course or Culture descriptions?
After you set up your log-in as described above, you can click through individual Courses and Cultures to learn more about them before enrolling.
Are there pre-requisites? What is the difference between introductory, intermediate, and advanced?
Think of our Courses as you might college classes: Some offerings are 101 classes that do not require prior knowledge, while others build on a foundational understanding of Vedanta.
- Introductory: This course is designed to cover the basics of Sanatana Dharma and its application to help face life’s challenges. Through weekly meetings, students will develop confidence in understanding and clarity in how to apply the teachings of Sanatana Dharma. No prior exposure to this knowledge is required.
- Intermediate: This course is designed to deepen participants’ understanding of Vedantik philosophy and its practical applications in daily life. Through a combination of weekly discourses, group discussions, and practical exercises, students will deepen their philosophical understanding, refine their spiritual practice, and cultivate a balanced approach to living in alignment with Vedantik principles. Participants should have a solid understanding of basic Vedanta concepts and terminology, and be ready to participate in active discussion. Completion of an introductory Vedanta course or equivalent study is recommended.
- Advanced: This course delves into the profound philosophical and spiritual teachings of Vedanta, offering a comprehensive exploration of its principles, practices, and applications in contemporary life. Building upon the foundational knowledge of Vedanta, this advanced course is designed to deepen understanding and facilitate personal growth through intensive study, reflection, and discussion. This course requires a serious commitment to study and reflection. Participants should be willing to engage deeply with the course material and dedicate sufficient time for reading, contemplation, and discussion. Completion of intermediate and advanced Vedantik study is mandatory.
Some of our Courses and Cultures have pre-requisites, in that they are designed around a specific identity or stage of life:
- Seeking Culture: For college students and young professionals, ages 17-28
- Happy Hour: For youth in grades 1-8
- Devi Culture: For women
But when we say a Course or Culture is open to ALL — we mean it!
Who teaches Courses and Cultures?
Great question! Our Guides are all trained Vedanta teachers, having completed Chinmaya Mission’s two-year monastic residential course. Their comprehensive training is coupled with their decades of rich experience teaching across North America and beyond. You can learn more about our spiritual Guides here.
I have a teenager in high school. Which Course should they join?
We recommend all our high school students join the Lifestyle Training course on Wednesdays at 9pm ET. Guided by Shankarji, it explicitly focuses on habit development and is designed to be highly interactive and accessible.
