Week 11: Samatvam (Balance)

Review:

Review from 3 weeks ago:

Titiksha – fortitude

  • Life is just a number of mental, physical and intellectual changes
  • We react to these changes with the 3C’s — complaining, criticizing, and crying
  • By having fortitude, we do not react to these changes and instead accept and learn from them
  • It is also a strength of mind to bear difficult situations with courage
    • Vision with purpose
    • Steadiness in efforts
    • Knowledge to persevere

Discourse:

Samatvam – balance

In the past few generations, there has been an unimaginable amount of technological changes. With so much outer progress giving us a life of comfort, it doesn’t mean that everyone is happier. If anything, suicide and self-harm escalates. So what is being neglected? Inner progress. Balance creates this inner progress while the world of materials keeps changing.

This material growth is standard of living and the inner growth is the standard of life

  1. Self-restraint
    1. Type 1:
      1. With no understanding
      2. This is suppression and you are depriving yourself because you are being told or you are superstitious
    2. Type 2:
      1. With understanding
      2. This is sublimation and it is the elimination of our false values because of our own conviction and belief

The more we sweat in peace, the less we bleed in war.

In every moment, we have two visions:

Preyas – short term vision(eating cookies everyday)

Shreyas – long term vision(not eating cookies everyday)

Review:

  • Inner growth vs material growth
  • Self restraint: Suppression vs Sublimation
  • Shreyas vs Preyas

Last week’s RAW was: Take a cold shower everyday – You must have fortitude to bear the cold water. It is just an experience, it’s okay. We should take it as an opportunity to learn how to embrace adversity.

This week’s RAW is: At the end of each day and your responsibilities, pretend that you only have your non-dominant hand.
