Hunger: Its Prevalence and Solutions

February 21 2024

Notes by Devank Narayan

Review: Last week we talked about our favorite snack, and how it can distract us.

Questions: What would happen if you didn’t get your favorite meal or snack ever?

Facts: 1 in 6 kids don’t get food everyday and have to go to a food bank, kind of like a soup kitchen.

Video: We watched a video in the class. In the video, it showed that there are a lot of people who don’t get enough food. More than 3 million children die because there is not enough food for them, even though there’s more than enough for everyone to eat. Americans (on average) use 10% of their income for food. Developing countries use 40% of their income for food.

Lesson: One of the reasons that there’s not enough food for some people is that there is a lot of conflict, not that there is not enough food. Lunch programs at schools that are giving away free breakfast and lunch are helping many people have enough food to feed themselves. Free breakfast and lunch is also helping kids stay focused in school, since they are not as hungry.

It is also giving parents time to work, since they are making dinner all the time.

Solutions: There is a website called freerice.com, which is a trivia game, and after you answers a question, a sponsor donates rice to people. It has donated over 200 billion grains of rice to developing countries and countries that don’t have enough food.

First Friend Rita shared an initiative called “Effort for Equality” being led by Chinmaya Mission Cleveland/Niagara – to level the playing field. We can donate to our local food pantry. Our goal is to reach 10,800 pounds of food donations by March 8.

RAW:

Talk to your parents/friends/neighbors to donate food, and share your food donation numbers with First Friends Rita, Dwija and Anvita.

Story: The children need food and a roof so they can live. So their mom works hard to keep the roof up and feed them.  We also watched a video on hunger. I learned from that video don’t throw away food, and don’t have wars so no food comes.

Lesson from the story: Do not waste food or throw it away. If you don’t finish it save the food and don’t throw it away. You can help by donating the food.

Activity: There is a game where you answer word questions and if you get it right you donate 10 grains of rice to the world. The name of the game’s website is www.FreeRice.com.

Raw: Look for a local food pantry and look up what they need. Write a list of what the food pantry needs, and you share it with your friends.
