Consumerism and Environment

December 13, 2024

Notes by Akilan Senthil

Consumerism means you want something that you don’t have but other people do and so you do everything you can to buy that.

For example: Let’s say your friend has the new iPhone 15 and you want it too so you buy it but then they get the newest toy so you get that too.

The R’s: Rethink, Refuse, Reuse, Repair, Repurpose, Resale Shops, Rent.

RAW: Don’t buy anything during this holiday unless you need it.

We had a Prthvi Sevasanga workshop about the earth.

What is consumerism?

Consumerism is when you think that having more things, clothes, toys, experiences, vacations or any other stuff will make you happy.

Video

About a cycle of a simple white T-shirt is made and what is the carbon footprint,

How the earth handles it, and how many white t-shirts are bought in a year.

What can we do?

  • Use used clothes or hand me downs
  • Make your own costumes rather than buying new ones for Halloween
  • Refuse new clothes and repurpose the current clothes

Activity

Dwija didi asked us to count our clothes and type the number in the chat.

Most people typed 40 or more. She asked if we really needed that many clothes and most said no. She said that you only need enough for a week and a few extra clothes.

Reflection Adventure of the Week
